abstract = "The sugarcane production is the main agricultural activity in the
S{\~a}o Paulo state, moreover, it is currently expanding in
acreage at high rates. However, this does not mean always an
increasing in the yield due to the climate negative factors that
might strike such activity sometimes. Drought is for sure, the
main nature hazard responsible for decreasing the yields in
agriculture. The season of 2013/2014 is being remarkably one of
the most affected in S{\~a}o Paulo since the last decades.
Measuring the impacts of these phenomena is a daunting task to be
carried out by traditional methods, so, Remote Sensing gives
powerful techniques and data for doing so. In this work, we used
MODIS reflectance and TRMM-TMI soil moisture data for assessing
the sugarcane production performance in S{\~a}o Paulo state from
2003 to 2014. As results, we found that according to the proposed
methodology, which is based upon EVI data derived from MODIS data,
the 2013/2014 season was astoundingly affected and the following
tends to be seriously stricken as well. The spatial resolution of
the TMI data is the main constraint for performing a good
analysis, even though, is a good source for assessing the water
availability over large areas allowing us to detect trends and
depict scenarios regarding this variable. In short, the EVI
accumulated for each season might be affected by the soil
moisture, however, because the system is too complex, precise
conclusions are difficult to be made.",
